Successful Career Change Planning

Successful Career Change Planning

The first and most important question any working/thinking person should ask themselves is “Am I happy with my current career choice”? Of course most people will immediately answer “Yes!” or “You bet!”.

But if you ask people why are they so reluctant to change their occupation, the answer would be something along the lines of “Because I am afraid”.

And that is good; fear is what made us evolve to the wonderful species we are today. But fear, like a double edged blade, will hurt as much as protect, and sometimes the hurting is much less obvious – making it particularly difficult to handle.

When we think about our lives, we are reminded that maybe it wasn’t our choice to go to business school. Maybe all those times you were thinking that you were doing the right thing, you were actually setting yourself up for a disappointment.

But how could you have known? How can any of us know what the future has in store for us? We can’t! And that is why being alive can be so much fun sometimes. Of course thinking that something will make you happy doesn’t necessary guarantee you happiness in the long run.

Is having money a source of happiness? Is love? Or is it something else; something that people don’t like to think about, or they just don’t understand?

Whatever the case might be, it is clear that a job which doesn’t make you give 100% of yourself should disappear and be forgotten forever.

Money

Money is the essence of what it is, was or shall be, for at least a couple of more centuries. It is the single most important unit of currency, irony being that you cannot eat or money, drink money or use money to protect yourself from the cold.

But people have convinced themselves about the ‘actual’ importance of money and where it could get you in this world.

So how do people get money? They pick a career and follow it until death – some people for much longer.

So the first step in emancipating yourself from all the troubles of your previous occupation, you must first a steady and reliable source of income. Once you have financial security, there will be much less ‘troubling thoughts’ racing through your mind.

Qualification

Another issue people have with changing their venue of operation, is whether or not they have all the necessary skills to make it in some place new. People who are unsure of themselves, will think that their previous job was just a fluke, and that no one will bother to hire them again.

Doubting your own skills can lead to many employers rejecting your application on the interview. If you cannot convince those people that you are a hard-working, qualified and most importantly – confident professional, then what business do they have hiring you?

Friends and Co-workers

If you have made friendships over the years, it would be difficult to abandon all those wonderful faces. New workplace, means new colleagues, which ultimately translates “trouble ahead”.

What if the new people you’d be working with, don’t find your taste of humor very entertaining? Or what if someone just doesn’t like your face, and is out to get you, just because you are the new guy? Be yourself and you will find everything fitting into its original place.
