How to Ask Your Boss for Salary Increase

How to Ask Your Boss for Salary Increase - It is that time of the year again. The period of annual appraisal and mid-year appraisals...

Your manager has a lot of say in how you move forward in your company, both in terms of position as well as salary. But there is something you can also do as far as your salary is concerned. This post will discuss few points that will help you negotiate your salary raise in a proper manner.

1. Know your worth

Before you even think of getting a salary rise, you should know how much are you actually worth. It will help in comparing your current position with the salary you expect. To know your worth you can do a research about how much is market willing to pay for your job.

Enquiring about similar job profiles in other companies can do this. I cannot stress upon the need of social networking for a dream career. In every other post I suggest readers to use social networking for their advantage.

Again to know your market worth you can take the help of social networking or simple age-old networking. You can consult a recruitment consultant. Keep one thing in mind that your salary raise is very much related to the potential growth of the industry.

2. Be well prepared

Keep all your documents in place that support your cause. These can include emails, client appraisal, some awards, and achievements throughout the year. Also you should know the market trends and pay scale for a job profile similar to yours.

Then based upon your potential build your case before meeting the manager. Try to anticipate the discussion beforehand and prepare accordingly.

Also a telephone or email might be a good idea to discuss other office issue, but it is always advisable to meet your manager face-to-face when it comes to salary hike. You can use the e-medium to schedule a meeting but don’t use it for actual meeting.

3. Believe in yourself

All your preparation can go to waste if you don’t have faith in yourself and you buckle at the first hint of criticism from the manager. If you know that you have made the organization some profits, back it up with documents.

You have done some research and then arrived at your worth, so believe in it. For instance, you automation tool might have helped the project cut back on time spent on unproductive menial task. Bring it into the discussion.

4. Negotiate-sell yourself don’t beg

You should be very clear about the reason for salary hike. You want to purchase a four-wheeler for your family. How do you think the company will respond? The reason for asking a salary hike should be professional and not personal.

If you have faith in yourself and you have really helped the organization than a salary hike is your right. So walk with confidence put your case forward in a positive manner. The last thing you want to do is to sort of beg for your salary hike. Remember begging can only garner sympathy and not currency.

5. Be realistic and specific

You believe that you have made millions for the company or saved some cash. But remember no organization is going to part with all the money you made for them. Neither is the company in an ideal scenario going to pay you more than your seniors.

So based on your job profile, responsibilities, market trends and work experience demand a realistic amount. Everything might be fine with you, but if the industry you are working is going through a tough phase, then again you should cut down on your expectations.

6. No implied threats

If you really want to work for your current organization with an increased pay scale then don’t threaten them with a resignation. It might seem unprofessional. You may get a pay raise but your image will get a severe beating. If the manager does not agree to a raise, simply ask the reasons. Remember a healthy discussion can solve lot more problem than we give it credit for.

Stay positive

If the discussion is not going your way, there is no point in losing hope. The key here is to stay positive throughout the discussion. Remember it is about you and your salary hike. Don’t compare yourself with others.

The worst recipe for disaster is when you start comparing yourself with your coworkers. There can be umpteen number of reasons for which they deserves a higher salary than you. Don’t dwell upon that. Always try to highlight your achievements, your accomplishments, keep the meeting focused to your work.
