How to Become a Writer for Beginners
How to Become a Writer for Beginners - The good thing about being a writer is no one can take away the title from you. To become a writer all you need to do is write. It might sound really simple, but this is where the problem starts. Most aspiring writers think too much about it rather than start writing.
There are no eligibility criteria to become a writer. All you need is a passion for writing and become proficient in the language you wish to write.
But before moving on the job of writing there are few points that you can take care of:
Assess yourself
In doing so, be honest and find out where you stand. Do you really have it in you to become a writer?
Investigate writing options
Once you are sure about yourself, search the various writing options available to you. These can start from maintaining a journal, to writing a blog. The various possible options are magazine writing, online article writing for cash, writing a book, writing short stories or copyrighting.
Basic requirements and some additional tips
a. Discipline
Set yourself daily goals, and meet them at all cost. Don't go to sleep before you have met your goals. It can be writing one blog post everyday or 500-600 words per night.
b. Be prepared to work odd hours
Ideas can strike anytime. You are preparing to go to bed and an idea strikes you. Be ready to note it down.
c. Read, read, read and write a lot
Read on the topics that interest you and also on the topic that are not related to your writing. An interview with the top 20 authors of USA had a common response, ‘they read a lot’. It also takes care of the continuous learning part required to become a successful writer.
d. Feedback
Take feedbacks from people you trust. This is applicable even if you are a really successful writer. A second person perspective can do wonders to your writing and help you explore new avenues.
e. Take a writing course or workshop
The tutor there might be able to suggest options that you never thought of previously.
f. Plan using logic and desire
Decide whether you want to pursue full time writing, or do it as a hobby. The former option might require you to leave your job and concentrate on writing only. This can lead to months without any pay. Be sure if you want to take this path.
g. Find support
A career in writing requires a constant support from people close to you, your family and friends.
Remember for every published novel, a writer will have 2-3 unpublished novels in his cupboard. These novels are not the failure but the learning process to become a successful writer.
Remember the Gladwell principle!
